What is the What post 2

Quote
"—You didn't tell us the answer: What is the What? My father shrugged.
—We don't know. No one knows."
p104

Significance:
The significance of this quotes is that it that it shows how ignorant these kids were to the events that were happening in their home land. Their father knows that they will eventually figure out "what is the what"

Question:
Do you think you know "what is the what"?

Quote:
"I suppose there is little in the way of violence that I have not seen in Sudan, in Kenya. I spent years in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, and there I watched two young boys, perhaps twelve years old, fighting so viciously over rations that one kicked the other to death."
108

Significance:
This shows people how difficult these people had it.They killed each other over food. I think that this can show people that they should appreciate the things that they have, because they could get killed over food.

Question:
Would you ever try to kill somebody for food?

Quote 1 Response: Yes, I agree to the fact that the kids were ignorant to the killing that was happening at their time. But I didn't quite understand your point, that the father knew that they will eventually find out.

Answer: I don't think i can think of what the "what" is, because there way too many things that it could be. The What could be anything but like the father said in the story that the MAN had the choice of cattle and The What.I would think hard about it before making a decision

Quote 2 Response: Yes it is sad how far these kids will go to get food and i think that the killing is driving them a bit crazy. These kids are going to the extreme just to get food and you can see how harsh it could be in their position.

Answer: No,I Wouldn't. I think that i would be able to survive if i took the time to find food. But i could imagine myself in their condition and position.
